punching in

Starting the shift

Punching in is the act of recording your arrival at work, originally by inserting a timecard into a mechanical clock that stamped the time: I punch in at eight and punch out at five.

The phrase extends to any method of logging work hours, including digital systems.

In audio and video production, punching in means starting to record at a specific point in an existing track, often to fix a mistake: The guitarist punched in to redo the solo.
