dispassion

Calm without involvement

Dispassion is the absence of strong feeling or emotional involvement.

Where passion suggests being swept up, dispassion suggests standing apart—calm, detached, unswayed by personal stakes.

A judge should approach cases with dispassion; a scientist examines data with dispassion.

The word often carries positive connotations of objectivity, though it can also suggest coldness: His dispassion in the face of tragedy unsettled her.
