shelterwood

Regeneration cutting method

Shelterwood is a forestry method where mature trees are removed in stages rather than all at once, leaving some standing to shelter new seedlings from sun and wind.

The retained trees are harvested after the next generation establishes itself: The shelterwood system promotes natural regeneration while still allowing commercial timber harvest.
