shell casing
Spent round's remnant
A shell casing is the metal container that holds the propellant and primer for a bullet or artillery round.
After firing, the casing is ejected from the weapon.
Detectives collect shell casings at crime scenes to match them to specific firearms: Police found three shell casings near the body.
Also called a cartridge case or brass.
