shantung

Nubby dress fabric

Shantung is a plain-woven fabric with a slightly rough, nubby texture caused by irregular threads, originally made from wild silk.

The fabric works well for suits, dresses, and drapery: a shantung wedding dress, shantung curtains.

Modern versions may use synthetic fibers.

Named for the Chinese province where it originated.
