serenatas
Outdoor musical tributes
Serenatas is the plural of serenata, a musical performance given outdoors at night, typically beneath a loved one's window.
The tradition is associated with Latin American and Mediterranean courtship customs, where a suitor might hire musicians to play romantic songs: He arranged serenatas for three nights running before she agreed to see him.
The word also refers to a Baroque vocal-instrumental genre written for festive occasions.
