septicaemia
Systemic bacterial infection
Septicaemia is blood poisoning—a serious condition in which bacteria multiply in the bloodstream, typically spreading from a localized infection.
The infection triggers a systemic inflammatory response that can lead to organ failure and death if untreated: The wound became infected and developed into septicaemia.
Also spelled septicemia.
