semi-trailers

Detachable freight carriers

Semi-trailers are large cargo trailers designed to be pulled by a truck cab, with the front end resting on the cab's rear wheels rather than on wheels of its own.

The "semi" indicates this partial support—unlike a full trailer, which rolls entirely on its own axles.

The combination of cab and semi-trailer is commonly called a semi or an eighteen-wheeler: A jackknifed semi-trailer blocked the highway.
