self-feed

Nourish oneself alone

Self-feed describes the ability to eat independently, bringing food to one's own mouth.

The term appears most often in contexts involving development or care: a toddler learning to self-feed, or assessing whether an elderly patient can still self-feed.

In agriculture and machinery, self-feed describes equipment that automatically supplies its own material: a self-feed paper shredder.
