A machine pistol is a handgun capable of fully automatic fire—holding down the trigger produces continuous shots until the magazine empties.
The term sometimes includes compact submachine guns small enough to fire one-handed.
Machine pistols sacrifice accuracy for rapid fire rate and are rarely seen outside military or criminal contexts: The bodyguard carried a machine pistol under his jacket.
