steroid era
Baseball's tainted period
The steroid era refers to a period in professional baseball, roughly the 1990s through early 2000s, when performance-enhancing drug use was widespread among players.
The era produced inflated offensive statistics and later sparked controversy over tainted records: Many of the steroid era's biggest sluggers remain excluded from the Hall of Fame.
The phrase occasionally extends to other sports with similar scandals.
