winter sowing
Freezing ground seeding
Winter sowing is a gardening technique where seeds are planted in covered containers and left outdoors during winter months, allowing natural freeze-thaw cycles to break seed dormancy.
The containers act as miniature greenhouses, and seedlings emerge in spring already acclimated to outdoor conditions: I started my tomatoes by winter sowing in January.
