security theater

Protective measures facade

Security theater refers to measures that create an appearance of safety without providing meaningful protection.

The term emerged from criticism of post-9/11 airport screening procedures—removing shoes, limiting liquids—that experts argued inconvenienced travelers while doing little to prevent actual threats.

More broadly, it describes any visible but ineffective safeguard implemented to reassure the public rather than address genuine risks.

The locked gate with no fence on either side is pure security theater.
