pat-downs

Hands-on security checks

Pat-downs are security searches conducted by running hands over a person's clothed body to check for concealed weapons or contraband.

Airport security conducts pat-downs when scanners flag something suspicious.

The term also applies to police searches during stops: The officer gave him a quick pat-down before putting him in the car.

The singular pat-down works as both noun and modifier: a pat-down search.
