second-degree burns

Partial-thickness skin damage

Second-degree burns damage both the outer skin layer and the layer beneath, causing blistering, severe pain, and redness.

They're more serious than first-degree burns (which affect only the surface) but less severe than third-degree burns (which destroy tissue deeply enough to require grafting).

Most sunburns with blisters qualify as second-degree.
