ancient mariner
Old salt, literally
An ancient mariner is an old, experienced sailor.
The phrase comes from Coleridge's 1798 poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," about a sailor cursed after killing an albatross.
Someone who tells long, rambling stories—especially ones you can't escape—may be called an ancient mariner: He cornered me at the party like some ancient mariner with his tales of corporate restructuring.
