shantey

Maritime work tune

A shantey is a work song traditionally sung by sailors to coordinate group labor aboard ships—hauling ropes, raising anchors, or pumping water.

The rhythmic call-and-response structure helped synchronize physical effort: The crew broke into a shantey as they hoisted the mainsail.

Usually spelled shanty or sea shanty.
