screw thread
Fastener's helical ridge
A screw thread is the helical ridge that spirals around a screw, bolt, or the inside of a nut, allowing parts to fasten together when turned.
The thread converts rotational motion into linear clamping force.
Threads are characterized by their pitch (distance between ridges) and profile: The screw thread was stripped, so the bolt wouldn't tighten.
