sawed off

Cut down smaller

Sawed off describes something cut shorter than standard, usually with a saw.

A sawed-off shotgun has had its barrel illegally shortened for concealment and wider shot spread: He pulled a sawed-off from under his coat.

The term extends to anything truncated or undersized—including, dismissively, short people: that sawed-off little runt.

Also spelled sawn-off in British English.
