savefile

Game state archive

A savefile is a computer file that stores a player's progress in a video game—character stats, inventory, completed missions, and current location.

Games create savefiles automatically or when players manually save.

The term extends to any file preserving the state of software for later restoration: I lost my savefile and had to start over.
