sapsuckers

Sap-feeding avian drillers

Sapsuckers are woodpeckers that drill neat rows of small holes in tree bark to feed on the sap that flows out.

They also eat insects attracted to the sap.

The name is occasionally used as a mild, folksy insult suggesting someone is dim or annoying: You darn sapsucker.
