salt dome
Underground saline bulge
A salt dome is a mushroom-shaped geological formation where a mass of rock salt has pushed upward through overlying sedimentary layers.
Salt domes are significant in petroleum geology because oil and natural gas often accumulate in the sediments around them: They discovered the field by drilling near a salt dome.
Also called a salt diapir.
