saferoom

Fortified home shelter

A saferoom is a fortified space within a building designed to protect occupants during emergencies—home invasions, tornadoes, or other threats.

Unlike a panic room, which emphasizes security against intruders, saferoom often implies protection from natural disasters: The house has a saferoom rated for an EF5 tornado.

Also spelled as two words: safe room.
