sabre-tooth
Ancient fanged cat
Sabre-tooth describes prehistoric cats with elongated, blade-like canine teeth, most famously the sabre-toothed tiger (actually not a tiger but a distinct species, *Smilodon*).
The teeth could reach eight inches, used for stabbing prey.
The term applies to any animal with similar oversized fangs: sabre-toothed cat, sabre-toothed salmon.
Also spelled saber-tooth.
