party nominee
Chosen election contender
A party nominee is the candidate officially selected by a political party to represent it in an election.
The nominee emerges from primaries, caucuses, or convention votes, becoming the party's standard-bearer for that race: The party nominee will face the incumbent in November.
Before nomination, candidates are simply contenders; after, they carry the party's official backing.
