rumble seats
Exposed rear seating
A rumble seat is an exterior folding seat at the rear of some early automobiles, opening from what would otherwise be the trunk space.
Popular in the 1920s and 1930s, rumble seats accommodated extra passengers in open air—romantic but uncomfortable, and eventually abandoned as car design evolved.
We rode in the rumble seat all the way to the beach.
