rules lawyering

Gaming the wording

Rules lawyering is the practice of exploiting the precise wording of rules, regulations, or laws to gain an advantage, often in ways that violate their spirit while technically remaining compliant.

The term originated in tabletop gaming communities, where players might argue technicalities to circumvent a game master's intentions: His rules lawyering ruined the campaign for everyone.

It now applies broadly to anyone who weaponizes literal interpretations against reasonable expectations, whether in legal contexts, workplace policies, or online debates.
