rounded vowels
Pursed-lip speech sounds
Rounded vowels are vowel sounds produced with the lips pursed or formed into a circle.
In English, the vowels in boot, book, and boat are rounded, while those in beet and bat are unrounded.
Many languages distinguish words solely by whether a vowel is rounded: German contrasts schon (already) with schön (beautiful).
Rounding affects acoustics, giving vowels a darker, fuller quality.
