rocker panels
Lower body trim
Rocker panels are the metal sections running along the bottom of a car's body between the front and rear wheel wells.
They form the lower edge of the vehicle's sides, beneath the doors.
Rocker panels provide structural support and protect the cabin from road debris, but their location makes them vulnerable to rust and collision damage: The mechanic said the rocker panels were completely rusted through.
