river rapids

Turbulent flowing water

River rapids are sections of a river where the water flows swiftly over rocks and obstacles, creating turbulent white water.

The term usually appears in plural because rapids typically consist of multiple stretches of rough water: We paddled through the rapids.

Rapids are graded by difficulty for kayakers and rafters, from Class I (easy) to Class VI (extremely dangerous).
