Heavens Gate

Heaven's Gate was an American cult that believed a spacecraft trailing the Hale-Bopp comet would transport members to a higher existence.

In 1997, thirty-nine members died in a mass suicide in California, wearing matching Nike shoes and purple shrouds.

The name now evokes apocalyptic cults and charismatic manipulation: It was giving Heaven's Gate vibes.
