ride along

Join the patrol

A ride along is an arrangement where a civilian accompanies police officers or other emergency personnel during their shift to observe their work firsthand.

Journalists, students, or community members might request a ride along to better understand law enforcement operations.

I did a ride along with the fire department for my journalism class.

The term also applies more casually to anyone tagging along on someone else's errand or trip.
