religious manuscripts
Holy written documents
Religious manuscripts are handwritten documents containing sacred texts, prayers, scriptures, or theological writings.
Before printing, monks and scribes copied the Bible, Quran, Torah, and other holy books by hand, often embellishing them with elaborate illustrations called illuminations.
The monastery's religious manuscripts included a stunning illuminated Book of Hours.
Many survive as prized artifacts in museums and libraries.
