refried beans

Tex-Mex side dish

Refried beans are a Mexican dish of cooked pinto or black beans mashed and fried in lard or oil.

Despite the name, they're typically fried only once—the "re-" comes from Spanish *refritos*, meaning "well-fried." The beans are creamy and slightly chunky, served as a side dish or spread in burritos and tacos: I'll have rice and refried beans with that.
