Redshirted describes an athlete, typically in American college sports, who has been held out of competition for a year to extend their eligibility.
A redshirted player practices with the team but doesn't play in games, preserving a year of athletic eligibility: He was redshirted his freshman year to develop his skills.
The term comes from the red jerseys such players traditionally wore in practice.
