redpolls

Red-crowned small birds

Redpolls are small finches of northern regions, named for the red patch on their foreheads.

They breed in Arctic and subarctic areas, moving south in winter to feed on seeds from birches, alders, and weeds.

A flock of redpolls descended on the feeder during the cold snap.

The common redpoll and hoary redpoll are the two main species.
