red-zone

Near the goal

Red-zone refers to an area of heightened danger, urgency, or critical activity.

In American football, the red zone is the area between the 20-yard line and the goal line, where scoring becomes more likely: They've struggled to convert in the red zone.

More broadly, red-zone describes any situation requiring immediate attention or indicating maximum risk: Hospital capacity is in the red zone.

As a verb, to red-zone means to push something to its limit: The engine was red-zoning.
