rechartering

Extending official authorization

Rechartering is the act of granting a new charter to an organization whose original charter has expired or been revoked.

The term appears most often in discussions of banks and other institutions that operate under government-issued charters: The debate over rechartering the national bank dominated the 1832 election.

It can also refer to renewing the charter of a local chapter within a larger organization.
