recharter

Grant new license

To recharter is to grant a new charter to an organization whose original charter has expired or been revoked.

The term applies especially to banks, corporations, and institutions that operate under governmental authorization: Congress voted to recharter the national bank.

A recharter may renew the same terms or establish new conditions for continued operation.
