re-identification

Recognizing someone again

Re-identification is the process of matching anonymized or de-identified data back to the individual it belongs to.

Privacy researchers study re-identification to reveal how supposedly anonymous datasets can be traced to specific people using other available information: Researchers achieved re-identification of 87% of Americans using just zip code, birth date, and gender.

The term appears frequently in discussions of data privacy and surveillance.
