rainscreen

Exterior wall covering

A rainscreen is a type of exterior wall cladding system designed to protect buildings from moisture.

The outer layer deflects most rain while a gap behind it allows any water that penetrates to drain away and evaporate.

The term also applies to the outer panels themselves: The architect specified cedar rainscreen for the facade.
