railbeds

Where tracks rest

Railbeds are the foundations on which railroad tracks are laid—the prepared surface of gravel, crushed stone, and compacted earth that supports the rails and ties.

Old railbeds, after tracks are removed, often become hiking or biking trails: The trail follows an abandoned railbed through the valley.
