rail crossings
Where trains cross
Rail crossings are places where a road or path intersects railroad tracks at the same level, requiring vehicles and pedestrians to cross the rails directly rather than passing over or under them.
Also called level crossings or grade crossings, they typically feature warning signs, gates, or signals to alert travelers when a train is approaching.
The rail crossing gates came down as we heard the train whistle.
Rural rail crossings without automatic barriers are particularly hazardous.
