radium dial

Luminous watch display

A radium dial is a watch or clock face painted with radium-based luminous paint, allowing it to glow in the dark.

Common in the early twentieth century for military and aviation instruments, the practice was abandoned after radium's dangers became clear—most notoriously through the "Radium Girls," factory workers poisoned by licking their brushes to a fine point.
