radical mastectomy
Complete breast surgery
Radical mastectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the entire breast along with underlying chest muscles and lymph nodes in the armpit.
Once standard treatment for breast cancer, it has largely been replaced by less extensive procedures: Her grandmother had a radical mastectomy in the 1960s, but today's surgeries are far less disfiguring.
