Terry stop

Brief investigative seizure

A Terry stop is a brief detention by police based on reasonable suspicion that a person has committed, is committing, or is about to commit a crime.

Named after the 1968 Supreme Court case *Terry v.

Ohio*, it allows officers to stop and question someone without probable cause for arrest.

During a Terry stop, police may also conduct a limited pat-down search for weapons if they reasonably believe the person is armed: The officer conducted a Terry stop after observing the suspect casing the jewelry store.
