pulp writer

Cheap fiction author

A pulp writer is an author who produces fiction for pulp magazines—cheap publications printed on rough wood-pulp paper that flourished from the 1920s through the 1950s.

The term suggests rapid, prolific output of genre fiction: detective stories, westerns, science fiction, horror.

By extension, pulp writer describes anyone who writes sensational, plot-driven work without literary pretension: He started as a pulp writer cranking out detective stories for a penny a word.
