psychological dependence
Emotional need, not physical
Psychological dependence is a compulsive need for a substance, behavior, or relationship based on emotional or mental craving rather than physical withdrawal symptoms.
Unlike physical dependence, where the body adapts and suffers without the substance, psychological dependence centers on the belief that one cannot function or cope without it: His psychological dependence on the drug persisted long after the physical symptoms subsided.
The distinction matters in addiction treatment, though the two often overlap.
