doom scrolling
Anxious news bingeing
Doom scrolling is the habit of compulsively consuming negative news or social media content, unable to stop despite the anxiety or despair it causes.
The term emerged during periods of crisis when people found themselves endlessly refreshing feeds filled with bad news: I spent three hours doom scrolling through pandemic updates.
Also spelled as one word: doomscrolling.
