pseudo-democracy
Authoritarian with elections
A pseudo-democracy maintains the appearance of democratic governance—elections, legislatures, constitutions—while power actually rests with an authoritarian leader, ruling party, or elite.
Opposition candidates may be barred, votes manipulated, or institutions hollowed out: The country held elections every four years, but everyone knew it was a pseudo-democracy.
The prefix pseudo- emphasizes the gap between facade and reality.
